Giving Parties: Celebrate AND Give Hope!

Life is full of wonderful opportunities to celebrate special moments and spend time with friends and loved ones. A giving party is special and fun way let your guests share in the joy of giving hope to others!

What is a Giving Party?

A giving party an increasingly popular way to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, wedding, or holiday party. The host asks for contributions or material goods to a charity of their choice in lieu of giving gifts. Or, you can just host a party for the sole purpose of supporting a charity and having a great time with your friends!

How to Host A Giving Party:

  • Choose your charity—be as creative as you want! You can design the party around the charity, or the theme of your party
  • Consider contacting the selected nonprofit —they might have specific needs or ideas to share
  • Communicate about the charitable donation on your invitations
  • Include information about the charity, and show how their contribution will make a difference
  • Do it low-key and low-budget, or go big and bold—it all counts!
Here are just a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

Adult Giving Parties

  • Birthday Wishes Party—encourage guests to bring party hats, decorations, gift certificates for birthday cakes or toys to give to a local shelter, so that they can celebrate a homeless person’s birthday or two!
  • Souper Bowl Party—ask your friends to bring cans of soup or monetary donations for a local food pantry
  • Crafty Friends Party—invite friends to bring craft supplies to make handmade cards for nursing home residents, military servicemen, veterans, or missionaries
  • Pasta Party for a Purpose—host a potluck or progressive dinner including pasta, make the “admission” be a donation to a local food pantry or No Kid Hungry
  • Anniversary Party—invite a refugee family that may have recently resettled in your area to your anniversary party. Get a list of household items they might need to help them in their transition. Share the wish list with your guests.
  • Second Wedding Gift Giving—chances are, if you are merging two households, you don’t need that many household items. Why not ask your guests to give the gift of freedom to those who are oppressed around the world? Set up your own fundraising event on International Justice Mission or Love146.
  • Don’t forget to check out your own favorite charity’s website, they will have great ideas of how you can fundraise!

Children’s Giving Parties

  • 50/50 Party—we love this idea from Buzz Bishop. Maybe your child isn’t quite ready to have a “no gift” birthday party, but wants to make an impact, too. This idea incorporates both! Ask party guests to bring some money (just $5-10) in lieu of a gift. Use half to buy a gift your child really wants, and the other half gets donated to a local charity. Win, win!
  • Book Drive Party—collect new or gently used books, donate them to kids that don’t have books of their own
  • Pet Pantry Party—Request that guest bring cat and dog food, bowls, collars and leashes, or monetary donations which will be given to a local animal shelter.
  • Put together Blessing Bags—Ask guests to bring tissues, granola bars, snacks, mints, socks, lip balm, trial size lotion, sanitizer, face towel, sunscreen, insect repellant, wipes or water bottles. Have the kids pack the goodies in gallon size plastic bags and encourage them to write or color a nice note of encouragement. Donate these to your local homeless shelter or keep them in your car when you see someone on the street that may need them.
  • Winter Warm-Up—Collect coats, gloves, hats and donate them to a clothing bank to keep needy kids warm in the winter months.
  • Chemo Care Kits for Kids—We love this idea from Pennies of Time. Kids make compassionate care kits for kids going through cancer treatments. Invite kids to bring a kit that they put together themselves, A checklist of suggested items can be found here:
The only limit is your imagination. Go with an idea that is close to your heart, or ask your friends for ideas!
What a fun, festive way to celebrate and give hope at the same time!
