This holiday season, for the price of a drone, you can pay tuition for a student in Sudan.

Or you can buy a hive of honeybees for a family in need instead of an electronic game.

And you can give a pair of running shoes to a local Girl on the Run for the price of a bracelet.

If the commercialism of the holidays gets you down, gifts that give twice can show someone you care and help people here in Lancaster County and around the world.

It's a form of gift giving in which givers make a donation to a charitable organization on the gift recipients' behalf instead of giving them an item. The organization then uses the donation to further its mission.

Locally, many nonprofits offer these kinds of gifts. You can learn about some of them at the Gifts That Give Hope alternative gift fair on Saturday, [December 12, 2015] which will bring together 30 charities that offer gifts from a school kit for refugee children ($5) to a ukulele for a local student ($100). The local fair has raised $175,000 since it started eight years ago.
